Obituary for James Edwin Johns

James Edwin Johns
James Edwin Johns (aka Jim Johns) of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away on July 27, 2019. After a courageously-fought battle with small cell cancer, he died in the comfort of his home with his family at his side. James was 55.
James was born September 24, 1963 in Dover, Delaware to his mother Helen Torok and his father Reverend Edwin Lee Johns. A professional arborist/tree surgeon, he was the founder and owner of Affordable PRO Tree Service, serving Mid-Tennessee since 1993; and the co-founder/publisher of Vital Force (ASCAP.) In 2001, he graduated honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Intercultural Ministries and World Missions from Canadian Bible College, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. James graduated in 1981 from Ottowa Hills High School, Grand Rapids, Michigan; his diploma included a certification in carpentry. He met his wife Karen in Seattle, Washington in 1989; the couple wrote two songs on their first date. James was an accomplished guitarist/musician, songwriter, and music producer; an avid downhill skier and mountain climber; a culinary arts trained chef; and a commercial fisherman on the Bering Sea, Alaska from 1990 to 1991. He enjoyed river and stream fishing, mountain bike riding, golf, and spending time with his family.
James was preceded in death by his father Edwin Lee Johns, and brother Eric Claude Johns.
James is survived by his loving wife Karen Louise Houle Johns of 28 years; sons Gabriel James Johns and Ezra Emmanuel Johns; mother Helen Torok; sister Nicole (Matt) Wyngarden; nieces Emry and Sylvie Wyngarden; and nephew Harvey Johns. He was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, and friend.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, August 10 at 10 A.M. followed by an 11 A.M. memorial service at Williamson Memorial, 3009 Columbia Ave., Franklin, TN 37064. James’ ashes will be laid to rest by his family in the mountains between Yakima, Washington where he was raised, and Wenatchee, Washington where his cherished wife was born. Memorial donations may be made to World Vision, PO Box 9716, Federal Way, WA 98063; worldvision.org; 1-888-511-6548.
