Condolences

Condolence From: Samantha
Condolence: I met Melvin when I was a student at Vanderbilt working in the Pediatrics Chairman's Office. We met on the plaza of the medical center. He commented on how fast I walk and told me I moved faster than a New York Taxi Cab. It was that joke that made me look for Melvin when I was working and walking across the medical plaza. It was always a delight to see him and stop for a conversation. I graduated from Vanderbilt, but came back to work for Vanderbilt and whenever I'm walking across the plaza, I think of Melvin. He was a true gem, and I know a spirit like his is with the Most High.

Condolence From: Maureen R Casey
Condolence: Melvin was one of the first people I met when I came to Vanderbilt to work in Biochemistry and Mass Spectrometry in 1998. He loved to talk about the Titans, was thrilled when he found out I'd come from Houston where the Titans had formerly been the Oilers. He was always a spark of fun or a deep well of commiseration, given the situation. He was so proud of his position, having met and worked with Nobel Laureates and other, like me, normal people. He never met a stranger that I could tell. I loved to see him every day with a different color outfit. Hats, shoes, the whole outfit in a blaze of yellow or green or red or whatever suited him that day.

I missed him when he retired, as I know a lot of people did. He was a touchstone around campus...usually found in the courtyard outside the hospital. He was an ambassador of goodwill and a treasure. He was also quite an accomplished dancer. I've shared one photo I had of him from 2006 when we had elaborate Biochemistry Christmas parties with DJ or band. He was always one of the first out on the dance floor.

My sympathies for your family, he spoke lovingly of his family, his farm, and he will be missed.

Condolence: I was so sorry to read of Melvin's passing. I worked in Biochemistry with both Melvin and Trinita for many years. He received some honors that I was not aware of and was glad to know about. We shared many conversations about life and love and I have missed him since I retired in 2005. My sincere sympathy to his family.
