Mr. Thomas Cathey

Thomas "Lester" Cathey, age 65, passed peacefully among family and friends February 8, 2013, after a very short battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be conducted 10AM Monday, February 11, 2013 at Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Calvin Lunn officiating. Burial will follow in the Neapolis Cemetery in Columbia, TN. Visitation with the family will be 6-8PM Sunday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Columbia, TN, he was the son of the late James Anderson and Juanita Hardison Cathey and was a 1965 graduate of Columbia Central High School. During his middle and high school years, Lester worked in his parent's grocery store, Cathey's Drive In Market, and later worked at H.G. Hills Grocery store. After graduation, Lester worked briefly at the Union Carbide Plant in Columbia prior to becoming a licensed real estate broker and home builder. Lester also opened and operated businesses, Cathey Furniture and SaveMore grocery, with his wife, Margaret and his parents, Jim and Nita Cathey. In 1992, Lester owned and operated Spring Hill Mini-Warehouses with sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Ray Williams, where he enjoyed meeting and helping people moving into the Spring Hill area until they sold the business in 2002. During this retirement, Lester enjoyed raising beef cattle and could be found attending numerous ballgames and gymnastics events where he cheered on his four grandchildren as they excelled in soccer, gymnastics and baseball.
Lester is also preceded in death by grandparents, Thomas D. and Susan Ophelia Cathey and Lester and Lucille Hardison; brother-in-law, Ray Williams; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lane Young and Oma Ingram Young.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Margaret Young Cathey; daughters, Alison (Tim) Venable and Jennifer (Jim) White; brother, James Michael (MaryAnn) Cathey; sisters, Honor (Wayne) McGaw and Cindy Williams (John) Collette; sister-in-law, Leslie Young; brother-in-law, Mike Young; grandchildren, Megan Venable, Matthew Venable, Jillian White and Jackson White; many nieces, nephews and cousins; Aunt and Uncle, Ann and Fletcher Luck of Knoxville; and dear friends, Doug and Anita Dowdle.
Pallbearers will be Tim Venable, Jim White, John Collette, Wayne McGaw, Gus McPherson, David Taylor, Josh Davis, Mike Cathey, Steve Gordon and Norman McGaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Linda and Larry Venable and Judy and Joe Roberson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Discovery Gymnastics, 1943 Union Place, Columbia, TN 38401, Spring Hill Little League, P.O.
