Peter Francis Coyne of Franklin TN passed away on June 15, 2022 at the age of 87. He had been ill with congestive heart failure and renal failure. He passed peacefully in his sleep.
The second born son of Irish immigrants, Michael and Beatrice Coyne from County Mayo, Peter was born in Chicago on December 6, 1934.
Peter graduated from St. Michael High School, Chicago. While employed full time, he continued his education evenings. He graduated from DePaul University earning a Bachelor of Arts. He later earned a Master’s in Business Administration.
During this time, young men attending school full time were exempt from military service. Upon graduating from university, Peter enlisted in the Navy where he served on a carrier.
Peter returned to Chicago after the Navy, and it was then that he met his wife, Patricia. They shared similar upbringings in their Catholic faith and immigrant parents. They wed in 1962. Several years later, they purchased their first home in Northbrook IL, lived there for 34 years, had two children, Sean Peter and Cathleen Patricia, and had wonderful and caring neighbors in the Ed Nadler and Bruce Young families.
Peter’s professional career started at Equitable. He then joined Brunswick Corporation, rose through the ranks, became its Director of Compensation and Benefits for the global company, and retired after forty years. It was a bittersweet day for Peter when he retired from Brunswick.
They retired to Franklin, TN to be closer to Cathleen and her family and to leave the bitter cold of Chicago winters. They enjoyed ocean and river boat cruising in Europe. Peter also enjoyed playing with his beloved dog, Peggy Sue, “gentleman” gardening and watching his flowers grow, joining friends at Investment Club meetings, poker, studying the origins words and imparting words of wisdom to his children and grandsons. He exemplified kindness and appreciated
life. Peter and Patricia would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 23, but Peter died the week before.
Peter was preceded in death by his father, Michael Coyne; mother, Beatrice (Corcoran) Coyne, and his brother, Michael Coyne (Minerva). Peter is survived by his wife, Patricia (Logue) Coyne; his sisters, Bernice Balaja and Mary Johnson; his sister-in-law, Minerva Coyne; his son, Sean Coyne (Rebecca); his daughter, Cathleen Coyne Nelson (Stokes); his granddaughter, Ashley Coyne; his grandsons, Peter, Michael, and Matthew Texter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be held in the historic 1871 St Philip Catholic Church, 113 Second Avenue S (Main Street), Franklin TN. The service is on Saturday, July 30, at 2:00 PM. A gathering will follow at the home of Peter and Patricia.
Our family also wants to send our heartfelt thanks to our niece, Therese Hoffman, for all her comfort and support. We want to thank Aveanna Hospice and specifically Peter’s hospice nurse, Stetson, for her outstanding care. Somerfield Health Center’s critical care staff was a God sent group. Know you all are appreciated. We are forever grateful.
